Agape

On Sunday mornings at 9:45am the Agape class meets at Meadowbrook UMC upstairs in the classroom to the right of the room across from the elevator (it is easier than it sounds). We have snacks and coffee every morning. Right now we are currently in a study called, "We are United Methodist". We are talking about what it means to be a United Methodist. Bring a bible and join us for this study. The study will end in three weeks with an Easter brunch and then we will begin a new study. Come and be a part of this.

Easter Sunrise Service

Awaken Easter Sunrise service coming up soon on March 23rd. Just a reminder so that you get it on your calendar. We will be having a sunrise service at 6:45am at Oakland Lake Park on the West side at the pavilion. We will have breakfast and have a sunrise service at the park. We will not have Awaken on Easter evening. Come on out and watch the sunrise on Easter with us.

On Saturday March 22nd Meadowbrook UMC will be having an Easter Celebration for children. It will begin at noon. Bounce houses, live music, Easter egg hunts, Easter bunny, games, and food! Get excited!

We changed it up a little bit this past week and we had worship in the sanctuary at Meadowbrook. It was great! Kyle Howton brought us the message this week using a rubix cube. Kyle talked about the stress that we have in our lives and how we can deal with it by turning it over to God. "I wish there was some kind of life instruction book..." Oh yeah there is! In case you were wondering Kyle solved the rubix cube in about 3 minutes flat... twice. I have a couple of pictures from last night that I will put at the bottom of this page. After worship we all treked down to the fellowship hall and had more than enough pizza and some sort of delicious cake that I did not get the name of. Come and join us for worship next week! A Bad Year for Tomatoes

The Meadowbrook Players present "A Bad Year for Tomatoes". The show dates are this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm. The play is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. The message was about how we become so busy in life, and how spending more time in prayer will give you rest. After worship and dinner there was a small group that went to the CLC for a little Ping Pong tournament.

Awaken: February 10th

This past week at a Awaken we had a great crowd. We began our service for the week with worship. We sang several songs and the Rev. Jim Chandler came to speak to us. Pastor Jim spoke to us on 1 Corinthians 10:23-24.

"We are allowed to do all things," but all things are not good for us to do. "We are allowed to do all things," but not all things help others grow strong. Do not look out only for yourselves. Look out for the good of others also.

Pastor Jim asked us to open up our hearts and minds for what God has for us in our ministry. After worship we had some sloppy joes and tots. Then a group of us went over to the CLC and we played some volleyball.

Next week Rev. Kyland Dobbins will be bringing the message. Invite a friend or two and bring some others. See you all soon!

On groundhog day we had gutter clean out day. 16 different homes had their gutters clean out that morning/afternoon. Thank you to all of you that were a part of gutter clean out.

Super Bowl Sunday... Wow. You saw what happened and if you didn't you can go here to find out. We had a great turn out and as always had all the food we could ever want. I even ate some of it today there was so much. It was good to see all of you come out and hang out with us during the super bowl. What a game!

Next week we will be back to normal. Worship starts at 5:00pm and after that we will have free food for all. All are welcome to join us, so tell a friend about it.

Lent begins this week. Meadowbrook United Methodist Church will be having an Ash Wednesday service this Wednesday in the sanctuary at 6:30pm following Bistro. Bistro is at 5:30pm and they will be serving the traditional Fat Tuesday dinner of Pancakes! Please contact the church office to put your name down for Bistro. Bistro is 5 dollars for a great meal.

Gutter Clean Out!!

This Saturday is Groundhog day and we will be having gutter clean out day. We will be meeting at Meadowbrook at 8:00am for breakfast and then at 9:00am we will leave to clean out gutters. We have a long list this year so, we can use all the help we can get. Get your work clothes on and come join us. Remember we start at 8:00am with a hearty breakfast.

Super Bowl Sunday!!!

Come and join us on Super Bowl Sunday for our Super Bowl Party. This Sunday come out for the game and we will have drinks and subs. Bring your favorite snack to the party and cheer that somehow neither team wins. February 3rd the game starts at 5:30pm so we will see you there.

The following week February 10th we will be back for worship. Invite a few friends and tell the first person you see. Come and join us at 5:00pm and we will have free food after worship.

Awaken: January 27th

This past week we celebrated the one year anniversary of Awaken: Worship Gathering. We are so thankful to be able to come and worship together each week in a little bit of a different style. We introduced a new song called "Awaken" by a band called Daydreamer. This week Rev. Kyland Dobbins was our speaker. Kyland spoke to us about anniversaries. We talked about anniversaries being a good time to look back to see just how far we have come. In our personal lives we have that opportunity to take look back at our lives and see were it is that we made need Jesus correction. In our mistakes, faults, and other. Jesus is our liquid paper that stains us clean. After the message Rev. Jim Chandler led us in communion. Then we made a special presentation to say thank you to our chef and the band. After worship we chowed down on some food. We had grilled cheese and soup and as a special bonus we had an ice cream sundae bar. Be on the look out for some videos from last night. The Great Debaters

Actor Denzel Washington brings some star power to local United Methodist church services in a specially produced video available for downloading at www.umc.org/greatdebaters.

In the video, Washington tailors a greeting to United Methodist congregations and thanks them for a “legacy of support” on behalf of the 11 historically African-American colleges and universities long sustained by United Methodism’s Black College Fund apportionment.

The five-minute video also features excerpts from Washington’s new film, “The Great Debaters.” Set in Marshall, Texas, the movie stars Washington as Melvin B. Tolson, a brilliant but volatile debate coach. In 1935 Tolson inspired Wiley College students to form the school’s first debate team and challenge the University of Southern California (shown as Harvard in the film) in a national championship. Despite incredible odds, Wiley beat Southern California—and a score of other oratorical powerhouses.

Although church crowds may seem an odd audience for a Hollywood movie appeal, Washington notes that “The Great Debaters” is a “David and Goliath story” tackling issues that leave many audiences feeling as if they’ve had a spiritual experience.
“My faith,” said Washington, “has made me realize there are things much more important than just making movies. It’s important for me to tell stories that people will benefit from: stories about life, about actions and about consequences.”

Awaken: January 13th

At the beginning of this year Rev. Kyland Dobbins joined the staff here at Meadowbrook United Methodist Church. Kyland is the associate pastor here and we are so excited to have him with us! Rev. Dobbins brought us the message last night at Awaken. Kyland brought one of his favorite CDs with him, "Room for Squares" by John Mayer, and he talked about being a "square" in this world and how we are square pegs trying to fit into a round hole, and in order to do so we let God mold us and shape us. We took some special time this week to remember our baptism. After worship we chowed down on some pancakes, sausage, and bacon. Don't you just love breakfast for dinner! Come out and join us next week at Awaken for some worship, fellowship, and more FREE food. I hear that Tacos will be on the menu for next week. The youth and myself would like to thank everybody very much for helping us with the Youth Room remodel. We are now calling the youth room "the Loft". Thank you for all of those long days of hard work. All of the painting and pulling up that carpet that just didn't want to come up was needed. It has all really paid off. We love our new room! What an excellent start to a brand new year! It was great to see so many of you this past Sunday. Our bass guitar, Jerry, was out this week, but Matt stepped in and played both bass and electric guitar. Thanks Matt! Two excellent weeks!

We would like to thank everybody that helps make Awaken happen each and every week. To all the wonderful people who help out in the kitchen and cook those amazing FREE meals each and every week, to all of those who help out with the set up every week, to all of those in the band and sound crew, to all of our guest speakers and regular speakers, and to everybody who has ever been to an Awaken service. It couldn't happen without all of you so eager to help and be a part of the service. We thanks God for each and every one of you!

December 23rd... This week Jim was the speaker and he talked to us about the Great Christmas story. We sang a few songs and threw in some carols. We then ate a whole ton of Christmas Pizza (it was regular pizza, but why not call it Christmas pizza).

December 30th... We had a great turn out for the last Awaken of 2007. We watched a video from the Rob Bell nooma series, sang several songs, and then we had some meatball subs.

Come on out to Awaken on January 6th and worship with us and then eat with us. Tell a friend or two about us and then bring two more. Awaken is for all ages. See you all soon!

Is there anything more beautiful than a gigantic stack of handmade fresh sandwiches?? This week we welcomed back several people who were home for the Christmas break. All of you who are back in town... you need to come and see us. All of you who never left town... you need to come and see us too. All of you who come and see us often... You come and see us again. Jim was our speaker this week and he brought us all the way up to the manger. Matt Roper brought us a song for altar time. Many of you have asked what that song was... the song was by Dave Matthews and it is called "The Christmas Song". After worship we dug into that delicious stack of sandwiches that were topped with all of those wonderful sandwich toppings.

This was a good week. What a great turn out. Jim was our speaker this week and he spoke about this advent season. This was Andrew's last week until the new year. Andrew went home to Georgetown for the Christmas break. We had some great sloppy joes and then went and played some football in the CLC.

Breakfast for Dinner?? Yes we did!! It was delicious too! We had a really good night this past week. We had a little hold up with some broken guitar strings, but that gave us an excellent opportunity to share our joys and concerns with each other. Rev. Jim Chandler brought us the message this week. The announcement of a new Sunday school class was made. There is a new Sunday school class for Young Adults that meets on Sunday mornings at 9:45am. They are in the room upstairs and the end of the hall opposite the water fountain. This past Sunday the class started a series on Advent. All are welcome! They are looking for a name for the class, so if you have any suggestion please let them know.

Thanksgiving week has come to a close after so much good food, snow, and more food. We had a great night this past Sunday. Jim was back this week. He talked to us about service and relationships. He reminded us that our service does not end when we leave worship. Our service is only beginning at that point and we take that service out into the world. What a great night with a great group. The band was all back in full force this week with the switch of Andrew from Djembe to Axillary Percussion player (this just means he plays a lot of random percussion instruments now). We had a large group there last night. Kyle Howton brought us our message after Jim had to slip away to help somebody. Kyle did a great job. He talked about Grace and how it is the ultimate gift. For dinner we had some amazing soft tacos and nachos. After worship and dinner we went over to the Community Life Center again to play some football. After the Cowboys being so amazing we got football fever. Come out and join us next week at Awaken. We start at 5:00pm followed with some FREE FOOD. Bring a friend and tell three more. Another great night of worship, fellowship, and free food! We miss Tyler and Jerry this week. They were celebrating at the wedding of a friend, but we will see them next week. We went acoustic and it was a great change of pace. Kyle Howton brought us the message this week. Kyle talked about all the stuff that we have and all the stuff everybody else has. He reminded us that God loves us all the same and it doesn't matter who has the most stuff or who has the least amount of stuff. Our wonderful Chefs prepared a delicious spaghetti and meatball dinner for us with some ooey gooey brownies and it was all FREE! After dinner we went over to the CLC and did some bouncing and played a little football. It sparked some interested in playing a little more football. What a great group of people that were there this Sunday. We missed Matt Roper (electric guitar) this week, but he'll be back. We opened with a little bit of time to greet your neighbor and meet the person next to you and just say hi. I love it when we do this, because it reminds us just how much saying hello can brighten up someones day. Hello! Rev. Jim Chandler brought us the message this week. He also made the announcement that Meadowbrook will be appointed an Associate Pastor in January. We are very excited about the future of this service and the future of Meadowbrook UMC. We then went on to eat that free food we love so very much.

Halloween Carnival!!!!

Meadowbrook is hosting their famous Halloween Carnival (Fall Festival) on October 31st from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in the community life center. There will be games, bounce houses, cake walks, a general store, and carnie food. Bring the kiddos out for a good and safe time. Get those costumes ready!

If you would like to help with the carnival there are several ways that you can do that. They need cakes and cookies. On October 28th after Awaken they are going to begin setting up in the CLC. We must carry all of the many many booths from the garage to the CLC. They need as many hands as thay can get to get it all moved over. If that doesn't sound like it is for you then you can help on October 31st with some last minute decorations and touch ups in the CLC all morning. They also need people to work the different booths, so if you would like to volunteer to assist with a booth then be there at 6:00pm on October 31st to get ready for the fun to start! Finally you can help by letting people know when and where the carnival is, so they can join us in the fun. You can call the church office to find out any more information.

What a great day! We updated our sound system this past week and we are so grateful for that. I am pretty sure that I ate more chili dogs than any one person should ever eat. The chili dogs were awesome! Rev. Jim Chandler brought us our message this week. We were reminded that our service does not end when Awaken is over. We continue our service throughout the week. Awaken: October 14th

Wow! Breakfast for dinner always creates that reaction. Soft fluffy (cushy?) pancakes, juicy sausage, and that crisp bacon, with lots of different juice options. Mmmhmmm... Breakfast. If you missed this past week you missed out on some awesome food. The band was all back and in full force and we had a great time. After Awaken we went over to the community life center to play some volleyball. I think that a couple of all-star volleyball teams are coming together out there.

Come out next week for some more free food, worship, volleyball, and fellowship! We still have some flyers left so grab a couple and pass them out. I have one on the visor of my car so that I can see it and it gives me a good reminder that Awaken is about to happen! Tell a friend. See you next week!

Awaken: October 7th

We had a great time this past Sunday at Awaken. We missed Tyler (drums), Jerry (bass), and Andrew (djembe) this week, but they will be back with us in full force next week! With them being out it gave us a chance to try something a little different. We went all acoustic and set everything up a little differently. It gave a closer more intimate feel to worship. After worship we all participated in the culinary arts by building our own sandwiches just the way we wanted them. Some of us with maybe a little to much mustard. We all trotted over to the Community Life Center afterwards where we got in a couple of games of volleyball.

Awaken Information

We will not have Awaken this Sunday (9-30). We will be having Awaken on October 6th. As many of you know Jeff and Claudia Roper organize and prepare our meals and help set up every week at Awaken. Matt Roper is a part of the band for Awaken. Claudia's mother (Matt's Grandmother) passed away peacefully at roughly 4pm on Thursday. She was surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, and other family members. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all. The service will be on Sunday at 3:00pm at First UMC Duncanville.

Awaken: September 16th & 23rd

The last couple of weeks we have had such a great time at Awaken. Come out and see us and bring a friend or two. We will have some flyers at the door. Take a flyer as a reminder to come out to Awaken on Sunday at 5:00pm. I put a flyer on my desk at work, so that I remember, "Oh yeah Awaken is on Sunday!" I have one on my fridge too, but that is not so that I remember that is just because it looks so good on the fridge. Here is what our flyer looks like so you know what to pick up.

The food seems to get better and better every single week! A big thank you to the volunteers that help with the meals! They are amazing! This past weekend the meatball subs were glorious! I love that I could put more mozzarella cheese on my subs as I could ever imagine. It was delightful.

Rev. Jim Chandler has been our speaker each week and if you haven't heard his sermons come out and get a piece. Jim is very entertaining and will keep your attention all night long.

After Dinner stick around and hang out in the Community Life Center here at Meadowbrook with us. The volleyball games after dinner are very intense, so if you are interested in some good volleyball come out and join us!

We had a great time with worship, food and volleyball this past week. We had around 30 people come out this week. Rev. Jim Chandler spoke about 9/11, remembering those involved in that tragic day and how positive things can come out of it for our community and this world.

Awaken has started again!

We have had a good turnout both times and have had a great time. Rev. Jim Chandler is doing a great series called The Gospel Unplugged. He is a great speaker and we have learned a lot about how we can become more involved in our community and our church while moving forward on our spiritual journey.

The food has been fantastic (tacos the first week, then sloppy joes) and it's free as always! We have been playing all sorts of games over in the Community Life Center afterwards. Come on out this Sunday at 5pm. It should be a blast!

Awaken: August 26th

This SUNDAY Awaken will kick off for the Fall (even though fall is not here yet)!!!! We will start worship at 5:00pm and we will have FREE FOOD for everybody afterwards worship. Our speaker this week will be Rev. Jim Chandler. Jim is the Pastor here at Meadowbrook United Methodist Church. If you have not met Jim yet come out and meet him, because he would love to meet you! We will have great music, inspiring messages, and prayer.

Afterwards stick around and play some volleyball with us in the Community Life Center or just hang around with us.

3-on-3 Basketball tournament

4-on-4 Volleyball Tournament!

This coming Sunday July 15th we are going to be holding the first annual (possibly quadrannual) 4-on-4 Volleyball tournament in the CLC at Meadowbrook United Methodist Church. Get your 4 person team together and come out and compete in the tourney! If you don't have a team already don't worry! We will put together teams on Sunday at 5:00pm if you don't have a team already! Break out the knees pads and get your arms ready for action. We will start at 5:00pm and go until we have a winner.

Please show up at 5pm so that we can make the brackets and get the games started.

6th of July Party and Volleyball!

Rangers Game

We had a great turn out at the Ranger game this past Friday. Thanks to all those that came out. The Rangers won (shocking) and it was probably because we were there. I have one picture from the game that will be posted later. If you missed out on the Ranger game don't worry we are going to go again towards the end of summer. August 25th there is a Mercy Me concert before the Ranger game starts that we are attending. Tickets will be half price (I will let you know the cost when it is decided). Put this one on your calendar you are not going to want to miss it.

Vacation Bible School started tonight. There is a great turn out of children and adult helpers. Thanks for all of you that have been a part of making it happen. Keep Meadowbrook in your prayers this week as Vacation Bible School continues.

We all have busy summers ahead of us with family vacations and our jobs. We have put several events on the calendar for you to join with us in. Hope that you can join us. June 8th - Texas Rangers Baseball! Meet us at Meadowbrook UMC at 5:30pm and we will leave as soon as possible to go to the ballpark. Tickets will be six dollars at the door and we will try to get in section 307. Bring some extra money if you want food at the ballpark or any souvenirs.

June 9th - Potato Drop - call the church if you are interested in going. There will be 22 tons of potatoes dropped in the parking lot at Acton UMC. We will bag them up and then transport them to local food ministries.

June 10th - 14th - Vacation Bible School. This is for 4 years old to 5th grade. Anyone interested in being a part in any way call the church office for details.

June 24th - 29th - Youth at Meadowbrook leave for Mission trip. Please keep them in your prayers.

July 1st - Open Gym - 5:00pm to 7:00pm

July 6th - 6th of July party at the Ropers house. We will party from 7:00pm - to 9:00pm. Bring your swimsuits and an appetite. For directions email us at awakenworhsip@hotmail.com

Awaken Summer Gatherings

June 3rd we are going to kick off the summer with an Awaken cook out! Come and hang out with us for free! We will have food, music, fun, and even a little worship. We had a great time again this week. Around 25 people were out to worship and enjoy some fellowship. Kyle Howton gave a great talk about bringing Jesus into every part of our lives and how surrounding ourselves with other Christians will only make us stronger. We ate soft tacos and nachos this week then we played basketball, Uno and Pass The Pigs in the CLC.

We had a great time this week! Patrick showed a Rob Bell video called Kickball that talked about giving in to God's plan for us even if we don't understand it. Then we all ate breakfast casserole, biscuits and gravy. It was delicious! There were about 35 people there and many stayed afterwards to play volleyball, basketball, cards, etc in the CLC.

Easter Sunrise

Happy Easter to all! We had a sunrise service at Oakland Lake Park at 6:45am... EARLY! We had almost 30 people there which is pretty good for it being 35 degrees out there. Mel Clark was our Easter speaker. The sun rose and the sky was an awesome pink color.

Thanks to all that came out to worship with us. Next week we will be back to the normal schedule at 5pm with free food following worship (breakfast casserole!!!). See you next week and bring your friends.

Our Abundant Life

Thanks for coming out to Awaken the past 2 weeks. Each week we had about 30-35 people, great speakers and great fellowship. On March 25th, Dr. Childs from Texas Wesleyan spoke with us. Afterwards we had tomato soup and grilled cheese and then went to the CLC to play volleyball, cards or pass the pigs.

This week we were very excited to have our own Rev. Larry Van Zile of Meadowbrook UMC speak about the abundant life we are promised by Jesus. He explained that our definition of abundant may not be the same as Jesus's definition and that the way for us to have an abundant life is to spread God's love through our own lives in all that we do. Then, we ate meatball subs and played volleyball, basketball, frisbee and of course pass the pigs.

Thanks again to all who came out. Next week we have a special Easter morning Awaken at 6:45AM at Oakland Lake Park. We will have breakfast, music and a special segment so be sure to bring a flower. Thanks for coming out to Awaken everybody!!!!

We had a great turnout this past week. Around 30 people were there to hear Rev. Brenda Wier. She showed us a great video that showed some of the wonders God has given us and talked about God's great love and how he created the world and all of us "for the love of it".

We had another great meal including pasta casserole, salad, breadsticks and cookies. I'm sure next week will be another great one.

We also had a great turnout for volleyball in the CLC. We also played basketball. Next week, there will be some card/board games as well as the usual volleyball and basketball.

Thanks again for coming out and we'll see you and your friends (because by now you know to invite them) at Awaken at 5pm!!!!

The Parable of the Rich Fool

Another Sunday, another great Awaken!!! We had around 30 people out to worship God and enjoy some fellowship. Patrick showed a Rob Bell video about the richness we are given by God and how to share it with others. He then talked about the Parable of the Rich Fool and reminded us to be generous with the wonderful gifts God grants us.

After chomping down on sloppy joes, tator tots and brownies around 20 of us went out to the CLC to play volleyball. We had a great time and look forward to next week! Bring your friends!

We had a great turnout this past week at Awaken! Around 50 people showed up to worship with us and over 20 stayed to play volleyball!!

Mel Clark started speaking on the parables with the parable of the unmerciful servant. She explained that to truly forgive others you must forgive from your heart. We have pictures of volleyball and video from the service so stay tuned for all of those updates.

Breakfast for dinner was awesome!!! Come out next week to hear some great music, enjoy some fellowship and have another great meal (rumor has it that sloppy joes and possibly tator tots are in the works).

Faith Like A Child

Thanks for coming out to Awaken on Sunday!!

We had a great turnout this week of around 40 people. We were especially excited to see some new faces among the crowd. Kyle Howton gave a great talk about having faith like a child. The food was amazing (nachos and soft tacos) and we had almost everyone stick around to eat and enjoy some fellowship.

The Fire God Lights In All Of Us

A giant THANK YOU to all that came out to worship with us on Sunday. We had around 40 people show up to join in fellowship, free food and fun. Katie Meeks works in the Central Texas Conference office as an Intern to the Hispanic ministries of the conference. She gave a great talk about the fire that God can light inside all of us.

Gutter Clean-Out Day

Gutter Clean-out Day is this Saturday, Feb 10. We will have breakfast at 8am for those who want it, then go clean out gutters at about 9am. We need lots of help, as we have 15-20 houses to handle. I know that it may be a bit early for some, but we really need the help.

We had another great Awaken this past week. Mel Clark gave an inspired message about finding peace within ourselves with the help of Jesus. Over 45 people were in attendance and around 25 stayed to watch the Super Bowl with us.

The first Awaken

We had a great kick off to Awaken! Thanks so much for all of you that came out to worship with us. There were over 60 people there! What a great start! Let's keep it going!

Kyle Howton began our series on "The Other 3:16s" this past week. His message was over 1 John 3:16 and he talked about loving your neighbors and not becoming indifferent in your faith. Next week Melissa Clark will continue the series with 2 Thessalonians 3:16.

NEXT WEEK WE WILL BEGIN AT 4:00PM!!!!!!!!!!!!
We will begin at 4pm and we will still have a free meal afterwards. Then we will have a super bowl party. So invite all your friends to come out and worship with us and then party with us Super Bowl style. Bring your favorite snack for the party.
